The Missus and I are volunteers at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. We meet a lot of really nice people and show them the very cool aircraft we get to hang around.
This is a (replica) Fokker Dr. I triplane. It is painted as the aircraft of Manfred von Richthofen, "The Red Baron" who was the leading ace of WWI, with 80 credited kills.
Richthofen said that the Dr. I's performance and maneuverability made it "climb like a monkey and turn like the devil."
One common misconception is that every triplane flown by Richthofen's unit was blood red. That is incorrect, as Richthofen reserved the color for his plane. The rest of his squadron (Jasta 11) could paint their planes in what ever colors they wanted, as long as it wasn't all red. The multitude of multicolored planes gave Jasta 11 the nickname 'Richthofen's Flying Circus'.
