Apparently, a group of cormorants is called a gulp. It must be true because I read it on the interwebs!
I discovered this morning that Virginia State Parks has First Day Hikes and as a part of those, holds a First Day Hikes photo contest. So I grabbed my camera and, with the Missus in tow, headed out to Pocahontas State Park to see what a dreary winter's day could provide as photo fodder (or foto phodder).
Beaver Lake, normally very photogenic, was gray and flat, but Swift Creek was positively overrun by water fowl. There were 50-75 Double-crested Cormorants, a dozen Canada Geese, a few mallards, and a single Great Blue Heron.
This little gulp was on the near bank of the creek, separate from the big gulp on the far side. They posed nicely for me while the Missus wandered further down the creekside.
