These trees in the Dutch Gap Conservation Area experienced some sort of near-catastrophe when they were younger, but somehow powered through it to survive and continue to grow.
Hazarding a guess, a larger tree came down on them, or rammed into them during a flood (their elevation above flood stage of the James River is measured in inches), but they managed to find light and were still able to reach for it. Whatever it was that happened, they are survivors.
