RAF in the Sun

This weekend is the Military Aviation Museum's BIG annual air show, Warbirds Over The Beach. Today, on Day #1, we had several thousand guests coming in to see most of our aircraft get airborne.

The planes went up in waves, based on certain themes. This was the Royal Air Force aircraft collection. The twin engine lead ship is our deHavilland Mosquito, a fighter/bomber. The plane towards the top of the frame is the Supermarine Spitfire, and the other plane is the Hawker Hurricane.

All three of the planes are powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. The Merlin makes a distinctive and beautiful sound, and to hear four of them passing overhead at the same time is magnificent.

Since I was on flight line guard duty I only had my pocket G7X with me to take quick shots (and then had to return to reminding people not to touch the aircraft and stay behind the ropes lest they walk into a propellor). When I took this shot I was panning and, once my eyes recovered from looking into the sun, I figured all I got was a white-hot blast of sunshine. As you can see, that was incorrect (but my retinas did get blasted...but one must suffer for one's art, no?)
Powerful composition

Cool planes.

Very nice shot. Perhaps not worth the risk to the eyes? Not many blind photographers about I shouldn't think!

@jon_lip Well, no, but it wasn't intentional. I just wasn't paying attention to that super bright thing in the sky along my line of tracking. But that would be an interesting photo challenge: blindfolded photography. Boss level: blindfolded photography in manual mode!
