I discovered this morning that Virginia State Parks has First Day Hikes and as a part of those, holds a First Day Hikes photo contest. So I grabbed my camera and, with the Missus in tow, headed out to Pocahontas State Park to see what a dreary winter's day could provide as photo fodder (or foto phodder).
Beaver Lake, normally very photogenic, was gray and flat, but Swift Creek was positively overrun by water fowl. There were 50-75 Double-crested Cormorants, a dozen Canada Geese, a few mallards, and a single Great Blue Heron.
This was the first cormorant we saw. I got this picture and then looked to where it was headed to see the rest of the cormorants (called a gulp) about 75 yards downstream.
