Taurus and Orion by timerskine

Taurus and Orion

I went out looking for the conjunction of the moon, Mars and Uranus. I found it but couldn't get a good picture of Uranus as it was too dim for my camera and the ambient light. But the constellations of Taurus (The Bull) and Orion (The Hunter) were bright in the sky.

Best on black.

Taurus is at the top center. It’s five stars in a V-shape. The bright red star is Aldebaran and is Taurus’ right eye. You can follow the V shape to the two blue stars that represent Taurus’ horns. Beta Tauri (or Elnath) is the upper star, Zeta Tauri is the lower star. The rest of Taurus doesn’t appear in this shot.

Towards the bottom center of the frame is Orion’s Belt, the three stars aligned nearly vertically. Three dimmer, more closely clustered stars below and to the right of his belt are Orion’s sword. The bright red star above Orion’s Belt is Betelgeuse and is Orion’s right shoulder. Bellatrix, the blue star at about 2 o’clock to Betelgeuse is Orion’s left shoulder. The little cluster of three stars above and between the shoulders are Orion’s head, comprised of Meissa, the brighter one at the top, and Phi-1 and Phi-2 Orionis at the base. Orion’s legs can be seen below and to the right of his sword (a good, logical placement, really). Rigel is the bright left knee and Saiph is his right knee. Finally, an arc of many stars between Orion and Taurus make up Orion’s shield or his bow, depending on which mythos you follow.

I would also like everyone to know that, other than Betelgeuse, Rigel and Aldebaran, I had to look up the names of the stars.
