I just showed this picture to David and it brought back memories of this church and of his childhood.
Apparently when he was about seven years old his cousin Raymond told him they were going to a wedding at this church. David at that young age wasn't in the least bit interested in weddings, until Raymond told him what they were to do.
It was local custom I believe that when the wedding guests arrived the gates would be tied shut and after the wedding they had to throw money over the gates to the children outside to have the gates opened again.
@onewing What a great story! Thanks Babs. Today we’re hoping to find the cemetery and some of the seven wells that are supposed to be around the town. Please ask David for any tips ;)
@tinley23 David says he doesn't remember anything about any wells in Hay on Wye but he said that he and his cousin Raymond jumped the Dulas Brook on the east side of town when they were kids because you could jump from Wales to England.
Cousin Raymond still lives at Gipsy Castle.
His auntie once ran the Wheatsheaf pub in Hay I seem to remember.
