I wanted to try one in black and white, but I'm still unsure how to do it so that the atmosphere is not too dark.

You could get Silver Efex Pro 2...you can download to free as part of a suite of software owned by google. It allows you to do selective lightening and darkening,,, but I quite like this as it is
