Schwabing by toinette

Schwabing

"My" part of the city was once a small village. Even in the beginning of the 19th century, the streets around mine were considered as suburban. That has changed completely. Schwabing is now one of the central parts of Munich, but I think you can still see on the picture that it once was a village. At the end of the 19th century, artists settled around the Academy of Fine Arts and Schwabing became bohemian. A lot of Art Nouveau-houses were built then. With the 1st World War, this life ended. Sadly, also Adolf Hitler lived here and in 1923 organised the Munich Putsch (it failed). After World War 2, people were very nostalgic and tried to bring back bohemian life style. Rich folk moved here and lives here until today. Around my house, there are lots and lots of Art Nouveau-buildings, but as I am a student I obviously only dream of living in one of them. I really want to take pictures of some of them in the near future.

Thanks for these history lesson! I'm thinking of renting a flat in Schwabing this summer but I have always stayed in Pasing. Any words of wisdom on this topic would be welcome.

@onewing @gigiflower @hermann thank you!
@stephanies Yes, they are great! Now and then, I find some of there kind somewhere else in the city, too. Thanks for your comment!
@yrhenwr Haha, I wish I were!
@jyokota Ah, yes, Pasing is probably a little cheaper, but I recommend staying in Schwabing/Maxvorstadt. Haidhausen is also very nice. A lot of students are leaving for the summer and some of them rent their rooms and/or flats for some weeks. Besides Airbnb & and others you could try to find something here: http://www.wg-gesucht.de/en/ I'm not that good at finding holiday flats in my own city, though. You are visiting Munich on a regular basis?

@toinette -- THANK YOU for the link! I just took a quick look and it looks promising. I have been in Munich every summer since 2008 when I stayed 5 months. I will be commuting to Schloss Blutenburg every day.
