114 Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother

Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon was the wife of King George VI and the mother of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon.

Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was born on 4th August, 1900 and passed away on 30th March, 2002; at the tender age of 101, just six weeks after the death of Princess Margaret.

She was Queen of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from her husband's accession in 1936 until his death in 1952, after which she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, to avoid confusion with her daughter. She was also the last Empress of India.

Equestrian Passion:

Like her daughter, The Queen Mother had such a great love affair with horse racing that a day out at the races became a right royal event.

The Queen Mother is seen here in the parade ring at Epsom Downs Racecourse, on Derby Day; Wednesday 1st June, 1988.

Dress code in the Queen’s Stand on Derby Day is either black or grey morning dress with a top hat, service dress or full national costume is obligatory for gentlemen.

Ladies are required to wear formal day dress, or a tailored trouser suit, with a hat or substantial fascinator.
