On the 19th January I reported being very excited by the night time sighting of a koala - the first I'd seen in the wild in my life time. Next morning it was nowhere to be found. Koalas are very, very, very rare in our area having died out in the 1930s. But here was one just 20m from the house. I so wanted a photo as proof of my discovery. I have walked miles following his call around the farm. Crinked my neck gazing up into the canopy of every eucalypt. Caught his eyes in the torch light one night but too high up to get the evidence I wanted. Then on Saturday with all the grandsons out to help with cattle work we found him - in the tree where I first saw him right beside the house. The joy! So here is the proof A koala is living in a tree beside my house about 30m above the ground high in the canopy of a big blue gum tree. Sadly I see it has conjunctivitis in its left eye. Wish I was able to help.
How wonderful. They are certainly on the move because a couple have been sited arounf here too (not by me) where they have never been seen in years. How exciting that you captured him.
This is marvelous news that you actually have a wild koala in your area. surely there must be a few others in the general district? good that you were able to get a photo. It ids sooo hard to do looking way up inot that eucalypt.
I remember the year we had Robins nesting in the well cover (a little contraption that looks like a wishing well). It was so exciting to watch the progress and see the little babies. Then suddenly they were gone- flying off to new vistas I suppose. But it was fun while they were there. Looks like he's managing with that eye in spite of the condition. And thankfully he feels you are not a threat so he'll stick around. Is there anything that he'd consider a treat you might be able to lure him closer with?
