As much as I enjoyed the impressive ruins at the Acropolis, I was more in awe of the ones we saw in Ancient Olympia. I think it was because we went in the late afternoon and seemed to have the whole place to ourselves. We wandered around and there was barely a person in sight as we imagined all that might have taken place there. It was quiet and felt as if I were in a cemetery. I guess in a way we were.
I remember going to the first Olympic stadium (of the modern games I think) and being in awe there. We did not make it to Olympia though. Nice capture of these unique columns- black marble? Usually they are white.
@eyesmile i have so many shots of all these ruins, but will just leave it with this one and the others I have already posted...otherwise I would never get the trip done posting...it was so amazing...so happy that I was able to experience it
they were marble at Athens, I assume they were here too...these seemed to be covered with something as well, kind of like stucco...even had some tiny shells in some of the matter they were covered with on some of them. It was so awesome to walk around and freely be able to touch and study them. It was pretty interesting to us to discover that they are built in sections and stacked up to make a pillar...then they covered them to hide the seams. at least that is how it appeared to us
Definitely a cool place to visit. I had a moment slightly like this when I stepped on the grounds of Circus Maximus in Rome. Some people were jogging around an ancient race course, it was so surreal in a way. Love experiencing history like this. :)
