...a study in tonal delicacy in the presence of noise. I wanted to prove to myself that digital noise in an image is not incompatible with subtlety of form and gradation.
@yeshanghai Thank you Yeshanghai - much appreciated - but your Fav didn't register... could you give the button another little push please as I wouldn't want to lose your appreciation?
@pistache Thank you Clare - much appreciated - but your Fav didn't register... could you give the button another little push please as I wouldn't want to lose your appreciation?
I haven't read all the comments above, but I'm surprised that ISO 400 would have given this grainy feel.
Love the concept tho, and fav'ing as a reminder.
@kwiksilver You're quite right Gillian, with the D610 it would need an ISO north of 3200 to produce this much noise natively. The noise comes from my chosen Nik Silver Efex Pro filter... Pinhole Camera! But, I believe, it doesn't negate the experiment which was to see how much noise I could introduce without losing the subtle details in the image. Doing this sort of stuff is how I learn... I accept that it's not for everyone!
A *fav for me so that I can make sure to remember this. I rather like the grainy feel in this. I've not run into intentionally shooting up the ISO to test this theory. But thank you! Now I have!
Ok, I've also read all the comments here. Suffice it to say that I like the composition and I think that the 'noise' adds a certain feel to the image. Isn't it amazing what tasks we set ourselves on this project?
@kt8ird It also looks good in colour (with no noise!) Kate, but we only had brown eggs and I think this would work best in colour as a 'white-on-white' shot... and somewhere, we've got some white plastic forks!
@kwiksilver Oh Gillian, trust me to overcomplicate things, that wasn't my intention at all. This is a very easy still life to set up - I didn't even bother with a tripod. The only fiddly bit was positioning the light so that the shadows fell unobtrusively: I used a LED ring light but a LED torch would do the job equally well. Good luck if you decide to try it.
@guernseysue Hi Sue - it would look good reflected in black plexi-glass.... that's something that Inreally want to get hold of, but I haven't succeeded in finding any in our neck of the woods yet. Where did you get yours? This would have been better photographed in a light tent for a shadowless image... something else on my shopping list!
Love the concept tho, and fav'ing as a reminder.
