Balancing Act... by vignouse

Balancing Act...

...a study in tonal delicacy in the presence of noise. I wanted to prove to myself that digital noise in an image is not incompatible with subtlety of form and gradation.
Very nicely done, excellent even

Never knew I'd been waiting for a study in tonal delicacy in the presence of noise but I'm so glad one came along. Beautiful shot in so many ways. Fav

I haven't read all the comments above, but I'm surprised that ISO 400 would have given this grainy feel.
Love the concept tho, and fav'ing as a reminder.

@kwiksilver You're quite right Gillian, with the D610 it would need an ISO north of 3200 to produce this much noise natively. The noise comes from my chosen Nik Silver Efex Pro filter... Pinhole Camera! But, I believe, it doesn't negate the experiment which was to see how much noise I could introduce without losing the subtle details in the image. Doing this sort of stuff is how I learn... I accept that it's not for everyone!

Just about perfectly photographed.
March 31st, 2015
oh heavens! I feel more of a novice than ever before! Thanks for explaining, Richard, but I think this is far above my capabilities.
March 31st, 2015
FAV!
March 31st, 2015
A *fav for me so that I can make sure to remember this. I rather like the grainy feel in this. I've not run into intentionally shooting up the ISO to test this theory. But thank you! Now I have!

If I can find 2 matching forks I'm going to try this tomorrow. If...

March 31st, 2015
Ok, I admit I had to reread this a couple times and study your picture to get your drift, but am happy to say I see what you mean!
March 31st, 2015
Ok, I've also read all the comments here. Suffice it to say that I like the composition and I think that the 'noise' adds a certain feel to the image. Isn't it amazing what tasks we set ourselves on this project?
March 31st, 2015
This is magnificent Richard, wow! very inspiring instructions. Thanks for sharing.

Fabulous Richard. I like the 'double balance' between the composition and how you've looked at noise! Fav
March 31st, 2015
Lovely symmetry and balance with noise. Fav
March 31st, 2015
@kt8ird It also looks good in colour (with no noise!) Kate, but we only had brown eggs and I think this would work best in colour as a 'white-on-white' shot... and somewhere, we've got some white plastic forks!
March 31st, 2015
Very clever - fav
March 31st, 2015
@kwiksilver Oh Gillian, trust me to overcomplicate things, that wasn't my intention at all. This is a very easy still life to set up - I didn't even bother with a tripod. The only fiddly bit was positioning the light so that the shadows fell unobtrusively: I used a LED ring light but a LED torch would do the job equally well. Good luck if you decide to try it.
March 31st, 2015
Brilliant!
March 31st, 2015
Wonderful shot! I've done that one before but on a black glass surface and also with a Cadbury's Creme egg; though that one had to be in colour!
March 31st, 2015
Great work, Richard - brilliant composition, nice grain and congrats on PP! FAV
March 31st, 2015
@guernseysue Hi Sue - it would look good reflected in black plexi-glass.... that's something that Inreally want to get hold of, but I haven't succeeded in finding any in our neck of the woods yet. Where did you get yours? This would have been better photographed in a light tent for a shadowless image... something else on my shopping list!
March 31st, 2015
I love this simple creative composition-not a fan of grain but might just change my mind a little
