I've decided to make some changes in my project and (quite) a few words of explanation would appear to be in order!
Last year I used one fixed lens camera all year and posted all images in B&W straight from the camera. This year I thought it might be interesting to continue along the same lines but to use prime lenses all year - a different one each month.
This worked reasonably well while I was using general purpose focal lengths but May with a 24mm wide angle lens proved to be far more difficult. Instead of choosing the lens to suit the subject, I found myself trying to find a subject to suit the lens. Inevitably, I often ended up cropping the image which made the whole exercise null and void. And I've also been running a 'standard' 365 project alongside my PLAY project meaning I've had to find two images every day.
Result: my project is fast becoming a chore... and I've been neglecting my commenting - sorry!
The image above is no. 2004 in my project so I think I'm allowed a (slight) change of direction. I will still post to my PLAY album when appropriate but, starting today, my regular daily post will be to my 365 album and I intend to both explore my personal photography 'tone of voice' and get much better at processing. And catch up with all your projects!
If you're still with me - thank you - today's image is another view of the inner harbour and quayside restaurants at La Roche Bernard where we're spending a few days.
Bright idea. This project I thought could be for own fun, learning, exploration, and a large etc. When we start to be "guilty" of him It comes the time to change something. I some manner I feel the same about to be restricted myself to a 50mm year. Perhaps I've done some exceptions, many times I found myself seeking frames to fit in 50mm , rather than being more "free style".
In black and white, with prime lenses or not, i hope to continue see more about your great pictures
I understood the kind of nerdy thing you have been doing but don't think I have every full appreciated it. I just like a good picture and maybe more appreciated pov and dof then the kind of lens and what you can and can't do. I was willing to keep following you no matter what you tried. But felt your frustration lately and am glad you are letting yourself off the hook. As I said to someone the other day (maybe Mrs S) I gave up trying to make pp tt trending (though sometimes I notice when I make them) but for me it is the picture I love and if that means no one but me is going to appreciate it well so what. THe joy comes from taking the picture and maybe using it in my scrapping. When I have the time and energy to take a photo ride I don't worry if I don't capture any pictures I just want to see the beauty that is around me. I sometimes apologize for showing the same picture or picture of the same spot. But I won't stop because it gave me joy to take that picture. That is what is keeping me going for now. When it isn't a joy I will be out of here. I love the comments and commenting is fun. When I come across a picture I love and no one else has commented on it I like to think I made that person smile for just a moment. The friendships are meaningful and I even find myself occasionally offering advice. Though we both know editing is my stronger suite. Oh and that dangling art I posted today is a little pretty I hang each summer on the overhand of my stoop. It catches my eye from time to time it makes me smile. Oh and as long as I am yaking on I am considering entering some pictures in the Rochester Fair which happens at the end of the summer. If you want to weigh in on which pictures might work = well I am never tired of hearing from my mentor.
Stuuning on black. I must admit I'm not a real fan of black and white anymore. I really do like this. It's gorgeous. The reflections and colors are awesome.
@joansmor Bless you Joan for taking the time and trouble to write some comforting words. You should definitely enter some photos in the Rochester fair... I'll have a think about which ones.
@seattlite Thank you Gloria! I'm afraid I don't agree with the 'My project my rules' philosophy - a 365 Project is a very simple concept - you take and post one picture a day for a year... period! The disci[pline and the rigour is what it's all about. Of course we're all free to do what we want but the result will be something other than a 365 Project. Sorry, back off my soapbox now ;-))
@vignouse fair isn't until end of summer. But I need to get them printed. Never did buy a photo printer because the new printer does a descent job for now and then there was the new lawn mower.
Gorgeous as usual. Fav! Rules are just made from words and words can have several meanings or inferences. I definitely do admire the dedication to your parameters. I see merit in being true to the rules but I am one for staying flexible.
I'm not posting much myself these days but I still enjoy dipping in and out of 365, in particular to follow your project. I sympathise with your approach to personal challenges. This is a classic blue hour shot. I always feel they work well when, as here, there's some warm light to provide some pools of orange to complement the blue.
Still following you whatever you decide 😉
