Sometimes photo opportunities arrive unexpectedly. The field in front of our house is about 1.5 metres higher than the lane and, with the good weather this summer, the maize has grown to about 3 metres high so our view for the past few weeks has been a 'corny' one. But this afternoon one combine harvester and a fleet of tractors restored our usual view in an hour or so. Shame about those power-lines though :-((
Oh golly whizz, I've seen lots of different crops harvested but never maize and never seen a stream of trash ejected like that. Very interesting photo.
What I like about this practice is the team cooperation of the local farmers. They take their tractor trailers to one another's crop, catching the flying maize, transporting it PDQ to the appropriate farm and returning to the cutting edge (couldn't resist this phrase) to do more of the same. Interestingly, the crop needs at least 3 consecutive dry days before harevesting. Not a problem this year.
@golftragic This is maize grown for cattle-feed Marnie so the whole plant including the corn-cob is chopped by the combine-harvester into small pieces which as stored as silage for winter feeding.
I remember when I lived in Greeley, Colo, this time of year was harvest. One didn't go on unnecessary drive due to the number of silage trucks that were on the road. And some of the stories you would hear...
These are BIG machines. Just in case we don't know it they have it stamped on them. Sometime photo opportunities come our way, having a camera to hand is the key. Nicely captured Richard.
Maize cutting already....none being cut here yet! Will be nice & dry in the fields! Lovely well captured shot! Maize grows quite tall so will definitely be much better now!
