De-husking walnuts is a messy job...

...but a worthwhile one - some of the little treats Mrs S finds when she is walking Mitzi.
will you eat or pickle these

@brigette Eat them - if we were going to pickle them we would have left the green husks on.

ah! These must be English walnuts. (We have lots and lots of black walnuts. difficult and filthy job to husk them

Only seen store-bought walnuts. Very cool.

How a squirrel ever breaks through all that hard covering remains a mystery to me. It's no easy feat for a human, I do know that.

Oh yes it is! I don't see much black though. My mom has a black walnut tree, and those husks leave a very dark black on everything.

It looks pretty tedious but I’m guessing the results make it worthwhile.

Lots of great textures in this neat shot

It’s been a few years but when I was a kid we did this a lot! Nice image!!

Never knew that one could pickle them.

Yes, it’s messy...but well worthwhile.

Messy? yep. Worthwhile? Yep. We had a prolific walnut tree in the back-yard but the sulphur-crested cockatoos beat us to the walnuts every year while the nuts were far too green for us to use. After much agonising, we had the tree removed, cockies are not welcome guests.

they look like a job! I've never done this - but I love the mixture of walnuts and mushrooms (gives a marvellous flavour!)

It does look like a job and a half, but I bet the treats inside are worth it!

A messy job but a super photo opportunity. Nice detail and textures!
