Not so many years ago, those who, through choice, necessity or employment, moved to a different part of the country or a different part of the world, found themselves isolated from their families, contact other than by an exchange of letters being difficult and expensive. In the past, a telephone call home was reserved for special occasions or emergencies as it was a very costly undertaking. Today we can pick up a telephone (including a cell-phone) and in a few seconds we can be speaking to someone the other side of the world with perfect clarity and at easily affordable tariffs. And thanks to the internet, we effectively have an international video-phone at our disposal, completely free.
Here's Mrs S this evening speaking to my brother and sister-in-law who live in Norwich, England... a call made by internet-phone - and worth leaving the washing-up for!
