Well here's your answer Lou. In fact lowering the contrast decreases the effect of the mist - logical when you think about it - but increasing it too much makes the rest of the picture too hard... so it's a question of balance.
No need to comment - this was just to satisfy my (and Lou's) curiosity.
@louuncouth Hi Lou - here's the answer to the question(s) you posed about my image 'Fisherman in the Morning Mist' - I probably would have gone this way in the first place, but I didn't have the time to do the processing!
