Seated Majesty

Up at 2.30 a.m. to go on the trip to Abu Simbel.

This is at the entrance to the Temple of Ramses II, which has four 28-metre high statues of Ramses. Inside, countless images of the Pharaoh giving offerings to the gods and even revering himself. He thought himself immortal, and didn't do too badly as he lived to the age of 96.

The complex (which includes a temple to Nefertari) was cut into giant blocks at the time of construction of Lake Nasser, and relocated to a man-made mountain at the cost of some 40 million dollars.

Nice perspective of these statues. I hope they last into the future and not be damaged any further.
