Oil Be Leaving...

Last day in NZ (actually 17 March!).

This is an olive grove in Cornwall Park, adjoining One Tree Hill. It was planted in the 19th century and at one time totalled around 5,000 trees, many of them sterile however.
Why sterile? They make a lovely show, still. Olive trees thrive around the Mediterranean. What I know about them is that there has to be a male and a female tree to produce seeds for replanting.

@sangwann Sir John (of obelisk fame) planted them in the 1860s with the idea of creating an olive oil industry, but apparently they never produced good fruit... the climate however is quite favourable and there are other olive trees planted around the city. @ivan Thanks Ivan! @kerristephens Thanks Kerri! @bobhuegel Yes, there is a great variety of species in the park!
