An international team of volunteers collect the eggs from the beach at Montezuma, where female turtles come up to lay them in great numbers, and then rebury them in an enclosed area divided into plots. Once the volunteers detect movement, they dig up the eggs and release the hatchlings into the sea.
We saw one such "release" of about 20 turtles. It was very moving to see them scramble down the beach towards the water: their innate desire to be with Mother Sea drawing them on, even when - as was the case on the day - the waves were great and rough.
