Kafue River ( week 2, year 2) by zambianlass

Kafue River ( week 2, year 2)

In an effort to try and prevent fishing stocks from being depleted, there is a three month fishing ban that runs from 1st December to the end of February.

Today was the first day of fishing in 2014 so we dusted off our fishing rods and took the boat out for a spin. We didn't catch anything but it was a perfect day, and magic to be out on the water.

Sadly the fishing ban is not enforced efficiently and many of the rural villages place huge nets year round across vast stretched of all the rivers. Mosquito nets donated by aid organisations to prevent malaria are a favourite amongst the villagers, who instead use them to clean out the rivers of everything, including all the baby fish. This is having a huge impact on the fish stocks in all the rivers.

Next time you hear of mosquito nets being donated to Africa to help in the fight against malaria, you can tell people how they are really being used.
like in a dream !

Wonderful shot...as to the mosquito nets, you can offer help but you can't change human nature. There will always be people who play the system. I'm not sure if that means we should stop trying to help or not.

Live the reflections, what a shame about the mosquito nets use :(

Wow! How sad. I can understand how hungry, impoverished and uneducated people may be short-sighted about saving for their own future, but surely there must be a way to get the villagers on board.
