My unnecessarily complicated macro slider rig. by batfish

My unnecessarily complicated macro slider rig.

Using macro extension tubes can give you a very shallow depth of field, so it's helpful to be able to moved the camera back and forth. That's where the slider rail comes in.

Since I've been adapting all my stuff to use the same quick release plate system, the slider rails need more stuff on them. What you are looking at is my tripod's ball head/quick release clamp. On top of that is my slider rail, with a plate on the bottom to go into the quick release clamp on the tripod, and another quick release clamp on top of it for the camera.

Of course there's knobs for the ball head and it's clamp, knobs for the slider, and a knob for the clamp on top of that, for a total of 7 things you can turn on this setup. It looks more complicated that it really is...
How awesome. I am so envious!
