Simply couldn't pass one of my favourite spots in the Lakes without stopping for some photographs. Took a leisurely drive home from my friend's on Saturday and had planned to get back to Newcastle some time in the afternoon to sort things ready for the next week back at work. Well, I had already joined the A66 at Keswick but the views were far too enticing and I simply took the next turn off again. Stayed for ages watching the setting sun over the stone circle. At the end there were only two professional photographers and myself slowly circling the stones to make the best of the light :-D
This one is especially for my oldest sister, who introduced us all to the wonders of stone circles!
Castlerigg Stone Circle, Keswick, Cumbria. This site may be one of the earliest circles in Europe, raised around 3200 BC. John Keats called it a "dismal cirque of Druid stones upon a forlorn moor". Clearly he didn't have the same weather ;-)
Thank you to everyone for tirelessly viewing, commenting and faving my recent shots from the Lakes. You are all truly wonderful! Still busy with a massive catch up session, sorry if I'm flooding your comment boxes...
@peterdegraaff Thanks so much for the fav and comment, Peter! The view form the plateau is unbelievable and with the light and snow on the fells you could every detail for miles - I walked around for ages with a huge grin on my face!
@peterdegraaff I think you'd love it! You'd just have to be prepared for the likelyhood of rain and more rain in the Lakes and on the West coast...only downside, but somehow those lakes need to get the water to feed them ;-) The weather is often more stable around Whitsun and early September...just saying ;-)
Got over my envy a bit more now and coming back for an slightly envious fav. ( a term I learned of a fellow 365er last week which I presume means I wish I'd been there to take that.)
@moirab Thanks so much for the fav Moira!! That afternoon made me very happy - only downside was I didn't have a tripod so no way to capture the fading light...
@fueast Lol, that makes the fav extra special :-D Thank you!! And I kind of know the feeling...somehow A LOT of your shots tend to inspire that feeling ;-)
It's a Fav! I only visited the Lakes last year for the first time, I've definately been missing a wonderful place. Beautiful lighting and a wonderful background to this shot
@sabanford@mstipe@mortisa@jenirainbow@johnnyfrs Thank you all so much for taking the time to comment! The views from the plateau are 360 degrees pure beauty! They couldn't have picked a better spot to build their circle
Oh fav fav!! The light and colours there are just beautiful... how glorious. Drove too quickly past the lakes on our way home from Scotland last summer... my heart is taking me north again and this is just the last straw!!! :)
I noticed the Angel in the north thumbnail and looked you up. I'm also from the N.E. (South Shields and Cleadon), although now live in Cambs. I love the layers colours and lighting in this shot. A Fav!
I too love standing stones, but of course, there aren't many of them Down Under. There's a beautiful set up in Glenn Innes, New South Wales though, which is my home state...
:-)
FAV
It was such a stunning afternoon and I just love the place
