Birthday Candles Banksia by corymbia

Birthday Candles Banksia

... flowering 11 days before my birthday. My husband planted this for me a few years ago and this is the first time it has flowered. Sadly, he never got to see it bloom.
You can see it in bud here: http://365project.org/corymbia/365/2012-01-20 and a bit further developed here: http://365project.org/corymbia/365/2012-02-24

I am truly grateful for everyone's comments and favs, and particularly to those wonderful people who voted for my very own little pirate in the mustache theme. Thank you everyone.
Lovely shot, at first glance I thought it was corn. Lol lovely flower, very unusual, worth the wait :0)

Now you will have birthday candles every year. Is it a protea?

Wow! This is some awesome texture! Love the colors! Nice shot, Amanda!

@lizzy_lu123 thank you
@scholzcrew thanks Sue - this is a Banksia (Oz native). Proteas are very closely related as they are also in the Proteaceae family but Proteas are from South Africa.

What a lovely capture of the banksia - nice that it has flowered, shame your husband didn't get to see it.
March 18th, 2012
Amanda, you can think of this flower as having some of your husband's care grown into it!

What a shame but what a lovely gift to look forward to each year. I imagine he never imagined in his wildest dreams the appropriateness of this plant when he gave it to you. Keep smiling cherub!
