So, the kids are sick and it's pretty hard to get out of the house, but I have a brand new SLR camera I have yet to take off automatic settings. So this is my very first ever attempt at dof. If you check my favs you will see I have saved a lot of them. I really want to learn how to do it well. (I am not one hundred percent sure how I got this but I could probably say that about most of my photography...and my acting for that matter, so I'm not worried) I don't expect to see it on the popular page but I am so excited to try something new. I have the manual. I am reading....but most of the time my Sony Cybershot steps in as back up to make sure I get the shot. I am hoping I won't need that as much soon.
So, snow on the railing of my deck. Ta dahhh.
oooh! how cool to have a new toy... and snow!!! (i mean, if it's going to be damp, cold and miserable, the least mama nature could do is give us the white stuff, right?) nice first run at playing with DOF...
i've actually NOT found the manuals to be in any way helpful unless i knew what i was doing first... anything i actually KNOW about photography i learned from 365 ;p
@northy Yeah. I'm kind of getting that too. But how do people do those gorgeous dof...and that amazing high key stuff!! I guess I just have to put in my time.
@edie what kind of shot are you trying to emulate? have you checked out the exif? frankly, i don't think there is anything in the manual that will help you out because altho' camera setting comes into it (i expect you want the lowest f stop your lens will give you), the real trick is more likely about the light and composition...
@northy Ha. I just need to learn more about photography and cameras in general. I pretty much have no idea what you are talking about but I will make a note of those terms and try to figure it out. Terrible but true.
@edie f stop meaning aperture... only i never know whether we're talking large or small - that is, i don't know whether a large aperture is a high f stop or a low f stop... a low f stop (like f/1.8) gets a very narrow depth of field which is what i assume you're aiming for... :)
i would say you did a great job for your first attempt!!! i still remember when i couldnt wait to learn how to do DOF shots!! and at the time i didnt even know it was called DOF, all i knew was that i loved how the focus looked!! lol. I hope you have a ton of fun learning :) I know i have!
