Highclere Castle, Hampshire

Well although we walked the same gravel drive and through the same magnificent front door, neither Carson nor Thomas was there to greet us....I don't think they would have left us standing in the torrential rain, either! Unfortunately the weather put us off enjoying the gardens but we did enjoy the state rooms in particular and the Egyptian exhibition was good (I hadn't clocked the connection between Lord Carnarvon and Tutankhamun). If you don't know what I'm going on about I apologise... The Castle is the seat of the Earls of Carnarvon, one of whom was working alongside Howard Carter when he discovered Tutankhamun's tomb. The castle was used as the setting for the tv series 'Downton Abbey' and it's possible to look around by pre-booked tickets at certain times of year. BTW I found out that Highclere Castle was designed by the same chap that designed the houses of parliament...
Thank you for calling by whether to view, comment or just pass. You're super. Mwah!
Loved Downton - love this castle - must see if I can visit sometime. Interesting about the Tutankhamen link. What a shame Carson wasn't there to welcome you!! Fav!

Well I *thought* that looked awfully familiar! Oh to even stand on those grounds and imagine the life-style! Though not thinking on *this* grand scale, I've seen some large houses and wonder, "maybe we could buy something like that"...and then I realize I'd have nothing left to buy the furnishings! Once again I realize how fortunate I already am, and it's just fun to "armchair visit" sites like this!

I never saw the show, but Claudia loves it and has all the DVDs I think, so I recognized the place. Must be one of the most famous houses in England now ;-)
