When this shot was taken, York railway station was busy, not with travellers, but with photographers and railway enthusiasts to witness the arrival of the steam locomotive 'Tornado'. It was completing a run from London hauling an enthusiasts special.
Tornado may look old, but it's construction was only completed about 5 years ago. It is based on a design from 1948-9. The original 49 locomotives were taken out of use by the mid 1960s and all were destroyed, but thanks to a dedicated group of enthusiasts enough money was raised to build a new locomotive. It is based on the original design but with some technical changes to improve efficiency and reliability.
It now works a variety of tours throughout Britain and is a popular sight wherever it travels.
I live in a town witch have an old railroad track trough the country , a historical station building and several old (steam) locomotives to be in use in summer . A beautiful pic./great capture of the Tornado . Do you have any technical knowledge of steam trains/machinery ?

reminds me of Christmas morning many years ago-my sister, brother and I clamoring down the stairs and seeing his Lionel train set, circling the tree-thanks for the memory. fav
Thank you Pyrrhula, it is great that there are many preserved railways. I understand the principles of how these wonderful machines work, but I don't have any practical experience with them.
