High Barn by fishers

High Barn

High Barn is on the western edge of the North York Moors some 3 miles north of Sutton Bank, and at the edge of the moors escarpment with views west across the Vale of York towards the Pennines.

This shot looks north from the cliff of Boltby Scar, with the overgrown ruins of a disused quarry in the foreground, and Boltby Forest and open moorland in the distance.

High Barn itself is an impressive stone building with long corrugated and stone extensions. It is surrounded by trees to provide some shelter in this very exposed spot, but sadly parts of the structure are beginning to collapse.

The shelter belt to the left of the barn has a fallen tree trunk which makes a great seat and from which marvellous views can be enjoyed. I've often stopped here for a snack and drink before completing a leisurely walk along the edges back to Sutton Bank. It provides a grandstand finish to a walk and is a route I always enjoy - fairly easy and flat but with marvellous views along the route.

Really beautiful!!!

Do you know... Is this the place where Emily Bronte's book "Wuthering hieghts" takes place... it looks like I've always imagined!

I love this landscape and the way you can see for miles and miles across the Moors. I'm sure I've said this before, but I do enjoy seeing shots of this area, which evoke fond memories of my late parents. Fav for me.

A great shot of this wonderful country. Down hill it must be great to do by cycle. Up , that`s some different. Thank you for the great and interesting information.

@monkeykid

Thank you Therese, it's one of my favourite places.

It isn't where Wuthering Heights is - that's about 40 miles south west of where this shot was taken. It is however a very similar kind of site. The location that Wuthering Heights is based around is called Top Withins, near Haworth in West Yorkshire, and it is just a shell of a building. Top Withins has a wonderful panoramic view down a valley and across the moors, very similar to this. It also is the only place I know in the UK that has footpath signs in Japanese as well as English, since the Bronte sisters are very popular in Japan! If you want any more info, let me know. I've visited it several times, but not recently.

@dolphin

Thank you Molly, and thank you for the fav! I love visiting this area, but I haven't been too much this year. However, I'm trying to make up for lost time, because the Sunday Moorsbus network that gets me to the more interesting parts of the Moors is due to close permanently from the end of October, as part of the current round of cost savings. Fortunately I have a substantial number of photos to remind me of the area!

@pyrrhula

Thank you Ferry - if you are walking north or south here, the route is reasonably flat, but west (left) from the barn is a very steep hill that is certainly hard work to get up!

@bizziebeeme

Thank you Loopy-Lou, I love this stretch of countryside, and when I walk here I usually have a break sat in the shade of the trees by the barn and enjoy the views!
