Whitby by fishers

Whitby

Whitby is a pleasant holiday resort on the North Yorkshire coast, where the River Esk flows into the North Sea. The river runs towards the sea through a quite deep valley, and the valley sides are lined with houses.

This view is across the harbour and up the hillside towards St Mary's Church. The church is a fascinating building with old box pews, and some bearing graffiti carvings of old sailing ships, created by sailors who were involved in the whaling industry many years ago.

Whitby is well known as the home of Captain Cook in the 1740's, and as the inspiration for Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. Bram Stoker regularly took holidays in Whitby.

Really lovely picture of Whitby, a place we want to visit. Nice information too. Do you know of Frank Sutcliffe, took wonderful pictures of Whitby and the fishermen? There is a museum of his work I think. [I've looked on Google, this is it: http://www.sutcliffe-gallery.co.uk/ ]

Nice composition, like the way you have incorporated the sea and the church on the hill.

Fabulous capture. Between you and Ian you've convinced me to start planning a holiday to York and the region. It looks like we could easily spend a month or more.

@ivan

Thank you Ivan - I have come across his work, and somewhere in the archive I have a book of his photographs. They really do have a very spacial quality, as well as showing us something of Whitby's past.

Your Whitby looks like a beautiful place. love the harbour and the ships, a nice view of houses and the church high on top.
not far from Toronto is a town also called Whitby. in 2011 the population was 122,000. not as nice looking as your holiday resort.

@bruni

Thank you Bruni, our Whitby is a lovely photogenic place. It's population in 2011 was 13,200 - a fall from the 2001 census when it was 13,600

@fishers Why the decline?
July 16th, 2014
@bruni

Not sure of the official reason, but probably because some of the houses have been bought as second homes by city dwellers. Unemployment is also quite high in Whitby, so some may have moved away to find work.
