Wyvern (Dragon) Carving, Sheffield Railway Station by fishers

Wyvern (Dragon) Carving, Sheffield Railway Station

This wonderful Wyvern, (Dragon) carving can be found on the stone entrance façade of Sheffield Railway Station. I am seeing this rather a lot at the moment as I travel weekly to Sheffield and thought it would be nice to share on the project.

This station is the old Midland Railway Station, (the other main station, Victoria closed in 1970) built in 1870 amidst controversy over its placing and route. These were resolved and in 1905 the station was further extended and a new façade was built including the carving of the Wyvern. This was chosen by the railway as it was considered in the mid C19th to be the symbol of the ancient kingdom of Mercia, broadly synonymous with the present day Midlands area, and the station was built by the Midland Railway.
