Concrete Church by fishers

Concrete Church

I spent most of the last week staying with my mum in Rotherham. She has had several medical problems recently, and after hospital tests on her heart, she needed someone to look after her, so I went to stay.

At 90, she has slowed down a lot, and really needs an afternoon nap - if I stay in with her she won't rest, so most afternoons I went out for a walk while she rested.

This shot was taken in the former mining village of Goldthorpe in South Yorkshire, and is of the first church in England that was pre-cast and was pioneering for its date of construction. It is an
early example of the use of reinforced concrete, then a relatively unknown material in the building of churches and for church furniture. The Italian style of the church and Venetian-styled campanile tower is also unique in South Yorkshire.

The church underwent alterations in the 1960s as cracks in the concrete walls began to appear. Unfortunately, the walls kept cracking and the tower was becoming more and more dangerous towards the end of the century. An incredible sum of money was raised and restorations were started in 2000. Completed in 2002, the church as you see it today very closely resembles the church you would have seen when it first opened in 1916.
