How to scare the children (and a few adults too) by fishers

How to scare the children (and a few adults too)

'Tornado' can't really be described as a preserved locomotive, since it was only completed in 2008. It is based on a design from the LNER dating from 1948, but with modifications to improve reliability and to take advantage of modern technology.

Here it stands at platform 5 at York railway station awaiting dearture to Scarborough, and it attracted a crowd of people. Some of the photographers can be seen on the right of the shot.

As it waited, the safety valve lifted and a whoosh of steam filled the space below the station roof and the sound echoed around. Sadly, it did bring tears to the eyes of several small children, and startled a number of adults too.

Thank you all for your comments and favs - and put another steam train on the popular page!

There have been few steam hauled trains in York in recent months, but there is something of a flood of them recently, so don't be surprised if there are more shots of them to come!
