One of the traditions of the British seaside holiday is the donkey ride on the beach. This shot was taken a couple of weeks ago in Bridlington, on the East Yorkshire coast, and the only (and rather essential) thing missing are enthusiastic children wanting a ride!
The tradition of donkey rides on the beach goes back to late Victorian times, and the first rides offered in Bridlington began in 1895.
Such rides have become much less popular in recent years, although this was one of two groups of donkeys in Bridlington - one on the north beach and one on the south beach.
Well, I'm glad that you enjoyed this touch of nostalgia - your comments and favs put this shot on the popular page.
Donkeys on the beach are far less common now - partly changing fashions in childrens interests, and partly an attempt in some resorts to ensure that the beach is kept clean. It would be hard to justify banning dogs from beaches because of their fouling, and then allow donkeys!
