Sculpture Equus Altus - a packhorse carrying cloth by fishers

Sculpture Equus Altus - a packhorse carrying cloth

A return visit to the new Trinity Leeds shopping centre, but this time on a sunny rather than a rainy day (previous shots - http://365project.org/fishers/365/2016-08-30 and http://365project.org/fishers/365/2016-08-29 ). This sculpture had caught my eye last time, but the dull conditions prevented me from getting a shot I was happy with.

It is called Equus Altus, and shows a packhorse complete with it's pack. It is perched on a tall pole beneath the central atrium of the shopping centre, some 50ft up in the air. The shot is taken from the upper gallery of shops.

Equus Altus was created by Glaswegian artist Andy Scott, and reflects the importance of the packhorse in the early industrial development of Leeds, particularly it's role in transporting wool and cloth.

The sculpture was commissioned by Trinity Leeds for the shopping centre's opening in 2013 as part of its public arts programme. Another work by Scott, the Briggate Minerva, stands outside the Trinity Leeds entrance on Briggate.
