Another sculpture I found in Barnsley was this of a child, situated outside the transport interchange. The blocks around it's feet, and the column on which it stands represent the past - Barnsley was once the centre of the Yorkshire coalfield, but all those mines are now closed. The child represents looking to the future, and a new beginning for Barnsley.
Apparently close to yesterday's statue there is another sculpture in memory of those killed in the Oaks colliery disaster in 1866 when 361 miners were killed - quite a contrast to this forward looking statue, and emphasising the human cost of coal mining.
