Thursday afternoon found me at York railway station to see this lovely locomotive pass through on it's way to the North York Moors Railway for their steam gala at the weekend.
60009 Union of South Africa is an LNER Class A4 steam locomotive built at Doncaster Works in 1937. It is one of six surviving A4s, and is currently operational and certified to operate on the main line, although it's boiler certificate will soon expire and it's owner then plans to put it on static display rather than overhaul it for further use. However, when you see it in motion like this, it does seem a shame it's working days may end.
I've also got pics of this locomotive back in August 2018 at Weymouth station. Yes it a fine example of steam power and reminds me of when I was a lad train spotting on a weekend. FAV
'The Flying Scotsman' is a mythical name and I don't know if it refers to this particular engine. Whatever, it is a gorgeous train and it would be a pity if it were overhauled to such an extent that it is completely changed. In that case I would prefer to see it in a museum than working on the rails.
Well, I'm bowled over to get so many comments and favs - thank you all!
This locomotive is preserved much as it was when working between London and Edinburgh in the 1950s & 1960s, and it brings back great childhood memories of watching steam locomotives as they passed through Doncaster railway station.
