Marble Gallery, Bankfield Museum, Halifax

One of the things I like about local museums like the Bankfield Museum in Halifax is the variety and contrasts of the various galleries. This shot shows two of the sculptures in the Marble Gallery (although it's a badly named gallery, since quite a few exhibits in there are not marble).

These two exhibits are a marble sculpture of a kneeling young woman by Antonio Rossetti (1819-1870) dated 1868 and a marble bust of a woman inscribed ‘Physick 1865', by an unknown artist.

I'm always in awe of the folk who can start with a rough hewn block and then turn it into something like this.

Beautiful shot. I love these art museums. Only last Saturday I visited a museum of fine arts in Valletta.

Thank you all for your lovely comments, they are very much appreciated.

I'm with Richard and Ferry - how do the sculptors even begin to carve such remarkable works of art from a rough stone?
