Ornamental Kale by fishers

Ornamental Kale

The Homestead Park has a shop selling plants, but only opened for quite limited hours. It is always interesting to see what is available, and I spotted this looking through the fence.

This plant is Ornamental Kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) and is part of the Brassica family, along with cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower.

Genetically, it’s the same as the culinary type that we love to eat. However, it’s been hybridized to look more like a flower with purple, pink, and/or white leaves.

It is a plant ideally suited to bring colour to the winter garden.

I love these, they are so pretty. I like the raindrops in the centre.
Not that I would eat one but I wonder if they are edible?
Fav.

@pattyblue

Thank you Pat. The leaves are indeed edible, though since they were created for looks rather than taste they are not very tasty and are rather bitter.
