The Moors Centre at Danby, in Eskdale, is one of two National Park centres in the North York Moors, with the second being at Sutton Bank in the south-western part of the National Park.
The long range of buildings includes a shop, informmation centre and gallery through the nearest entrance, and a cafe at the other end.
There are lots of activities in the grounds, and children are particularly well catered for. There are good views from here towards the hills, which are quite close, to the south.
The Moors Centre is housed in an old shooting lodge that belonged to the Danby Estate, owned by the Dawnay family. The core of the building is a 17th century farmhouse, transformed in the 18th century into a lodge for the Dawneys and their guests to enjoy grouse shooting on the nearby moors.
For the last few years the Moorsbus timetable has made this a good place to end a walk, with a drink and cake in the cafe, before a direct bus to York over the moor tops. That doesn't work quite so well in this year's timetable, though in compensation other areas, including Bilsdale, have a better service.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
The visitor centre at the Moors Centre usually has an excellent selection of books on sale, and can prove expensive. They have a selection of Moors walking guides and local history books. At the end of the last Moorsbus season I came away with an excellent book about the ironstone railway over the moor tops and into Rosedale, and another book about the moorland crosses and standing stones. They have been useful in planning days out ready for this Moorsbus season.
