This is a close-up of a type of heather known as ling, and this is the most common of the three types of heather found on the North York Moors.
In the background can be seen some bell heather, with it's rather stronger colouring, but with it's flowers now fading away and turning brown. Bell heather is the first heather to flower and the first to loose it's flowers.
The third kind of heather to be found on the North York Moors is cross leaved heath, but that doesn't feature in this shot.
Sorry for the slightly late responses and post today, Katharine and I have had a day in Rotherham, and have only just got back home.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and fav, they are very much appreciated.
The heather is particularly good this year. The ling flowers in this shot are not yet fully in bloom, so the moorland should look even more spectacular in the coming days.

Thank you Nina. It is a lovely plant, but it doesn't flower for very long.
