Following our hectic weekend last week, we had another hectic weekend in York city centre this week following the Ice Trail, a remarkable series of 37 ice sculptures scattered around the city.
Saturday was quite a dull day. We started with the less central sculptures and worked towards the city centre. Sadly, by the time we reached the central ones they were loosing some of their detail, because it was a relatively warm day for this time of year (12C) and the sculptures were melting.
Today I made an early start to do more shots of the more central sculptures. It was a bright and sunny morning, but a little cooler. The sun really does bring out the detail in the sculptures.
This sculpture was one of four in the grounds of Middleton Hotel, with this one being describes as a 'Monstrous Chimera'. Wikipedia describes the chimera of Greek mythology as "a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid creature, composed of different animal parts, from Lycia, Asia Minor. It is usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat protruding from its back, and a tail that might end with a snake's head."
The theme for this year's trail is 'A Journey Through Time', giving lots of scope for all kinds of wild and wonderful sculptures.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Middleton Hotel takes a very active role in events in the city. Not only did they host four ice sculptures, there was face painting and other activities for the children, and for part of the day a dray and horses from Thwaites brewery was on display.
