the great war (4) by graemestevens

the great war (4)

The story behind this shot is thus:
This young nurse, Nurse Lottie, had been writing to her brother who was already stationed at Gallipoli. The day that she was due to sail out to Gallipoli was also the day that all of those letters arrived back, marked with "return to sender - recipient killed". Lottie still sailed and it was another 4 weeks before her family received the official telegram to advise of the brothers death at Gallipoli.
The ugliness of war and the monumental cost is so extremely captured here. Such a most powerful series.

Return to Sender... Recipient Killed... The mind booggles at the crassness that let this happen.

Wow that is brutal, but I remember when I was in high school, a friend was called for over the intercom in the classroom. MR. Mossier, please send Joy to the office, her father has died."

Such a moving story & wonderful statue showing the grief as she reads the dreadful news. You can't imagine how she would feel yet still went on to do her duty. They were made of sterner stuff in those Days!

It certainly portrays raw emotion. I am sure that everyone who visits the exhibition will walk away having been touched by what they saw and experienced. You have done it justice. Thanks for sharing
