life amidst the gravestones

I was really looking for an interesting capture in town but just haven't quite got the hang of a sneaky shot. After a man moved out the way so as not to spoil my shot of the statues (in which he was integral to the composition), the policemen looked hard in my direction when I tried to capture the aftermath of the England result on our high street, and passers by stopped whilst I framed my supposedly casual photo, I accepted that I haven't quite mastered merging into the backround with my camera.

Instead, I entered the graveyard of the main church in town to see what nature had to offer me. I regularly walk by this graveyard, and admire the way the light falls amongst the stones and wild flowers, but hadn't ventured in before.
Brilliant close-up and background to back it , a fav

Love the DOF and coloring, superb detail FAV

I love the coloring in the background. How did you do that?

I think this is a beautiful close up. Well worth the visit.
Sometimes the photo ideas we have in our heads just don't seem to happen do they, but this is a gorgeous substitute for your planned photos.

Fabulous capture! Wonderful colors and details! As always, terrific narrative! Fav! :-)

@moonmtn I didn't do it. It is the grass and dandilions behind the grave stones and way out of focus because of the distance from the moss.

Lovely shot, perfect dof. Like it very much.

Nice capture, Moss has a special beauty when seen close, hasn't it?

Love your text. Ha ha, you are on a learning curve to being sneaky. At least you can't be arrested for photographing moss and lichen. I enjoy seeing how they colonise old structures.

Gorgeous!

This is lovely Helen and an instant Fav. I didn't think about the High Street being trashed after the game but I suppose it was! Funnily, I don't really attempt candid shots in Bedford as I don't really feel comfortable doing it there but I am quite happy snapping away complete strangers in Cambridge or London! I can understand your reticence

@joannakate @LaLa @moonmtn @chipsngravy @evalieutionspics @janemartin thank you each, for your most encouraging comments. They really give me a boost.

So well spotted and lovely layers. I like the sentiment you express.

@onewing Thank you so much Babs. I had another day like that today - sent a long time on a photo which should have been easy and that I wanted to use with a particular message in mind but was so unhappy with the results. Still - sometimes it works the other way around. Thank you for your encouragement.

@gaylewood Gayle - you are so kind with your comments. I am so grateful that you enjoy my commentary and take the time to read it. I am sure that I ramble on too much at times!

@ethelperry This is quite true Ethel. I am not keen to be arrested. I didn't notice the stern look on the policemen's faces until I got the photos off the camera! Moss and lichen and fungus are all so fascinating when magnified. I have never appreciated them so much.

@rosiekind Thank you Rosie. The high street wasn't that bad. Just a few boisterous young men outside one of the pubs and a greater number of police men. I was so glad that the trouble yesterday in France was minimal - my son was there and I was worried all the time!

Lovely textures and tones.

Well you have captured some nice textural detail. Street photography is difficult at first because we feel so self conscious. What I do is where dark boring colours, no makeup so that I blend into the background. May I say I love dressing up and being female most of the time!! I then move into the doorways or by the wall. I see my shot & I focus waiting for someone to walk into it. See some of my street images as examples. The other way to do it is to focus on something about the same distance as your subject and pretend to take lots of pictures moving your camera around and click on your subject as you continue to appear to take more pictures. And my final way, is to set the F stop to about 7 - 16 and then just swing the camera to the subject and click. Most of the picture will be in focus! Now obviously you may not want it all in focus, that is when you need to use the other methods. There is lots on the internet about how to do street photography. Good luck!

I forgot to say that it is not illegal to take images which may include people even children. But, be cautious with the latter. If you look at the Royal Photographic Society website, I am sure you will find lots of useful information about your rights! If not come back to me & I will tell you!

@marshwader Thanks for the useful hints Madeleine. If like anything else, it will be a long slow learning curve. I am most definitely cautious with children.
