Staffa by helenhall

Staffa

The island of Staffa is famous for Fingal's Cave - the inspiration for Mendelssohns Hebrides overture.

I remember learning about this in music lessons at school and was delighted to have the opportunity to visit and see for myself the fascinating geological formation. The six sided columns of rock are basalt.

If geology is ever going to excite someone, it would most certainly be here. After an hour on the uninhibited island, our boat left for the Treshnish Islands and as I glanced behind me, and saw the reflections, I had to be lightening quick to catch this before we were gone.

You will be seeing more from the Island soon, as I was captivated with the patterns and textures in the rock formation.
How amazing - the geography particularly! Beautiful still water to reflect! fav
