Ms Hairy Woodpecker by jankoos

Ms Hairy Woodpecker

I had to crop this a LOT - I stood outside in the cold and rain for 25 mins trying to get this pretty girl - she was not co-operative - but anyway - here she is.
Nice ! Your patience paid off!

There are those moments.....

It was worth the wait and the post processing. Great lighting and detail, you can even see the fluffy feathers.

@mak2 @welcometocarolworld @anton955 - Thank you!
@sansjuan - Thanks Carol - I really like this woodpecker - she is always alone - I need to read up on their habits. I have not seen a Mr Woodpecker - although the male flicker hangs around a fair bit - and he is also a loner....
@elaine55 @carolb - Thanks Elaine and Carol. I am hoping she hangs around and nests - would be fun to see her raising babies.

I think nature photography is definately under estimated. Nice shot.

Have you tried a suet block? They LOVE them.....I have so many different woodpeckers.....They will rest in the tree limbs near the suet blocks.....

Well worth the effort!

@welcometocarolworld - Hi Carol - oh yes - we are bird feeding stop central - LOL - several suet feeders, seed cakes, bird feeders. She was in the tree next to her favorite suet block and waiting for me to leave.
February 23rd, 2013
Nice to know there are other crazies out there like me....keep up the good feeder work....lol
February 23rd, 2013
Great dedication to catching 'that' shot!! It looks great and detail is fantastic :)

Love the patience you obviously have. Worth the wait. This is a great shot
February 23rd, 2013
@welcometocarolworld - lol Carol - yep - guilty as charged - crazy birdfeeding lady - LOL. We initially hung up a feeder so I had a distraction from work - then it expanded to several feeders, the suet etc.

@missk @kcman5 - Thanks Missk and Cathy. Cathy - I am often not patient - LOL.

@siobhn @mamamia - Thank you! :-)
@pflaume - we do, Lisa - but we are out in the country with woodland so lots of habitat. Can't wait intil the finches, kinglets and siskins show up.
@maggiemae - Thanks Maggiemae.

Excellent capture and well worth the wait. Never easy to get a photo of these very shy birds. Good processing too.

Terrific shot! It's even closer than the others.
February 24th, 2013
Very nice capture of the woodpecker. I came across two of them walking in the woods this week but they were too high up in the trees for a good shot.
February 24th, 2013
@anwan @jenniferruge - Thank you! :-) I bought a new suet feeder yesterday specifically designed for woodpeckers with a tail rest and this is the first morning I haven't seen the woodpecker or flicker in a few weeks. I think they know I am waiting for them to try it out. LOL.
February 24th, 2013
Nice capture, looks nice and clear.
February 25th, 2013
Wow!!!
March 4th, 2013
Did you use a tripod for this? The image is still quite clear, even with cropping. Amazing if this was hand held.
March 4th, 2013
@vitamink @cathrinemitch - Thank you!
@revjett - Hi Jett - no tripod but she was pretty close. I took many many shots of her to get a few clear ones. Woodpeckers are pretty shy of people and she wanted to get some food but at the same time was wary of me so she was hopping and flying all over the place. I backed off and waited quietly and finally she settled down a bit.
