Joanna:
Moments like that in the photo of my hike is one of the reasons why I like being in the mountains.
You would like to enjoy such a sight? That pleases me very much! Austria is just a bit far away ... on the other side of the globe, the exact opposite of Australia.
But the end of July I will fly to Australia. I begin my journey there in Darwin, go from there to Nitmuluk NP, then on to the Kimberleys, Derby, Cape Leveque and finally to Broome. From there, I step on the flight home.
@jyokota
Junko: Yes, you have to get up early to experience such moments in the mountains.
But it's worth it - at least for me. I have a mountain tour started already with the flashlight... You then look over to see the milky may... for me: just beautiful... In the mountains the air is very clear, there is not this light pollution as in the city ,
@jerome -- it sounds like you live in a wonderful place to have such access to early morning mountain views! When I summer in Munich, I often go to the mountains but never quite so early. I must reconsider my schedule . . .
@jyokota Junko:
In Munich you were? How nice!
I do not live directly in the mountains, but in a town on the Danube. By car I need 1-2 hours to reach the mountains. Most of them are one-day trips, which I do - my job does not leave me much time unfortunately... So I have to try to use the day as well as possible: at three or four o'clock in the morning I'm going away - so I arrive at dawn and have the day ahead of me. You have to remember: You have to be back before the darkness dawns! And at dawn you will experience in the mountains beautiful lighting effects.
@jerome -- I go to Munich every summer, and there are trains that take you to the foothills of the German Alps. But I've never gone as early as you do! I do know how dangerous and scary it is to not make it back down by nightfall -- I was stupid enough to do this once on a weekday when I was also alone in the mountains.
This is just beautiful - you can picture yourself standing there looking down of this magical scene. I do enjoy reading all the comments that your photos always bring about. You have a wonderful talent.
@jyokota
Every summer you are in Munich - you speak German well?
I am very pleased, if you like to be in the mountains! So you have already experienced how it is when one is surprised alone in the mountains of darkness.
The mountains are beautiful, but they also set limits. And sometimes they do not give a second chance... You also have to reverse prematurely - even if you still would like to reach the top. If you are alone in the mountains on the way, careful preparation is especially important! In Inernet there is a good side: http://www.bergfex.at/ (however in German). Then you'll find a lot of proposals for tours - from easy to difficult, for hiking, climbing, skiing. These tours are very well described. You can browse download the GPX data for almost any tour. If you are alone: get a Navi, if you do not already have one. Furthermore - and in the first place: the weather. Start no tour without stable weather. It is already a few years ago, but I remember well when I was surprised during the descent from a peak of a thunderstorm.
If one considers a few points, can assess themselves and respects the mountains, then you will be rewarded incredibly rich in the mountains.
I greet you in any case very warm.
Where are you now?
@jerome -- alas, my German is only good enough to help me eat like a local! I can read menus very well and I can shop in grocery stores and even the markets. The night I found myself alone in the mountains I had gone to Karwendel-Mittenwald. If I had known about the website you sent me I could have known more than what the friendly man at Deutsche Bahn told me, which was merely that construction on the train line would make it more difficult to get there for the rest of the summer. On top of all this, the police came onto the train on my way home and insisted on seeing my passport because I had crossed over to Austria and I was not an EU citizen! I am now in Chicago where I live most of the time but I will go back to Munich in July.
@jyokota Nice to hear that you were in the Karwendel - there you're already beyond the 2000 meters. From there actually the mountains begin.
The passport you had to show ... incredibly ...
It really makes me very happy that you're so faithful to Munich and regularly visit.
Nice to have met you, Junko! Wish you all the best!
