This afternoon Broad Street was closed so that the Alresford Fair could be set up for tomorrow.
It became a tradition in the town for the autumn sheep fair to take place on Michaelmas Day, if it fell on a Thursday, and on the Thursday afterwards if it didn't. It's a long time since sheep were traded here so a funfair is held instead. The date of recent funfairs follows this ancient pattern; Michaelmas Day was on 11th October in the old Julian calendar.
