Urban Sailors

A sailing school located at India Point Park uses the Seekonk River for daily lessons. Today's photo features a shot of a late morning class, enjoying a day on the water with the Port of Providence looming oppressively in the background. There's nothing scenic about that concrete jungle that has sprung up out of nowhere over the past few years. The lack of scenery didn't seem to mar the enthusiasm of the sailors. Whether or not that's a good thing, though, I've yet to determine.

This was one of two shots I processed for today's photo. I was torn between which shot to post. The other showed a somewhat less intrusive background, so in that sense, it didn't quite convey the story I was hoping to capture in the shot. I'll leave it to you to determine if I chose the right one to post. Here's the other shot: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Miscellaneous/Assorted-Photos/i-5TXcQcx/0/XL/2012-08-060173-copy-XL.jpg

Post processing started out in Topaz Adjust. I processed it as I would a normal color shot, but with an eye towards contrast knowing I'd do a b&w conversion. A brilliant warm filter was used, followed by adjustments to adaptive exposure, contrast, details, strength, and sharpening. In PSE, I converted to B&W using a gradient map in color blend mode. The top layer is a sepia photo filter.
