Eastern Medicine Singers by kannafoot

Eastern Medicine Singers

The Miriam Hospital Fall Fest covered several blocks on Hope Street in Providence this afternoon, and I thought it would provide some good photo opportunities. The sounds of Native drums reverberated through the neighborhoods as I approached the festival. The source of the music was the group seen in today's photo. They are the Eastern Medicine Singers, a collection of drummers and singers from several tribes located between Massachusetts and New Jersey. Most of today's drummers were either Narragansetts or Mashpee Wampanoags. The group is devoted to preserving the Native languages, especially Lakota and Algonquin, the latter being the primary language of most of the New England based tribes pre-dating the Colonial Period. All of the songs they presented while I was there were sung in Algonquin. The group is also actively involved in historical education and offer courses for both children and adults.

Post processing today started with a brilliant warm filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted the adaptive exposure, contrast, and adaptive saturation sliders. A slight levels adjustment was added in PSE.
